R&D Director (Condiments Experience)

Description

Our client is a leading manufacturer of condiments, including vinegars, mustards, cooking wines, sauces and dressings, and a variety of other liquid condiments.  They offer a broad array of branded and private label products and service customers in the Retail, Foodservice, and Food Ingredients trade classes from multiple production facilities located throughout the United States. 


 


Our client is currently seeking a Research & Development Director to manage and coordinate all research and development activities for the Company.  This position reports to the VP, Technology and will be based at their Florida facility (near Orlando/Tampa metropolitan markets).  Estimated travel is 30%.  Major responsibilities are, as follows:


 


RESPONSIBILITIES:


 



  • Develop, facilitate, and execute all activities for the assigned R&D and Product Development projects including but not limited to: new formulation; formula modification; selecting and ordering flavors, ingredients, and supplies as needed; initiation of the package and/or Product Risk Check sheet; record keeping, regulatory search and document filing; data base information; conclusion and final study report. Monitoring pre-qualification and qualification runs, and closeout visits to the production facilities to ensure proper procedures and GMP practice compliance.

  • Delegate, supervise, and train quality and operation staff as needed at the introduction of new package, product, or process.

  • Travel to other locations to assist and direct achievement of R&D goals (about 30% estimated travel).

  • During the qualification runs and first production runs, exercise independent latitude to oversee pre-site, co-packer, and production facilities. 

  • Establish and track PPD timelines, and budget.

  • Provide early warning of anticipated difficulty in achieving project goals and timelines; propose solutions.

  • Ensure collection of all pertinent R&D and Product and Development technical information/documentation; effectively communicate, investigate, and resolve study issues.

  • Respond to customer technical needs and assist with data review and data queries resolution.

  • Ensure compliance to MAQS quality standards and regulatory agencies.

  • Provide technical data support for regulatory compliance.

  • Ensure efficient and effective use of budget.

  • Effectively interact with and monitor activities of external vendors and project leaders at other production facilities.

  • Provide required weekly status reports on all ongoing activities to VP. Tech. Services.

  • Provide support for generating required legal documents.

  • Provide day-to-day guidance and oversight of subordinates; actively work to promote and recognize performance.

  • Keep up to date on overall activities of the team, identifying problem areas and taking corrective actions.


 


REQUIREMENTS:


Ideal candidate will possess a minimum of seven years of condiments or liquid condiments experience in Research and Development with five years of experience at a manager or higher level.  PhD or Master’s in Food Science or related discipline is strongly preferred.  Combination of education with equivalent experience will be considered.  Additional experience and qualifications are, as follows;


 



  • Proven leadership and business acumen skills.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in supervising and motivating subordinates.

  • Commitment to excellence and high standards.

  • Experience in conducting food/condiments research.

  • Familiarity with FDA, TTB and other related regulatory agencies.

  • Ability to deal effectively with a diversity of individuals at all organizational levels.

  • Excellent presentation, written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong organizational, planning, problem-solving, and analytical skills.

  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects, manage priorities and meet deadlines. 

  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.

  • Good judgment with the ability to make timely and sound decisions.

  • Acute attention to detail.

  • Proficient on computer programs such as Excel, Words, PowerPoint etc.

  • Working knowledge of data collection, data analysis, evaluation, and scientific method.
